HOW TO BE THE BEST
ARTIST IN THE WORLD
1) Think big.
2) Cry a lot.
3) Kill people.
4) Laugh a lot.
5) Know that if you didn’t choose to be an artist – you would have certainly entertaining world domination or mass murder or sainthood.
6) Contradict yourself constantly
7) Work on Beauty, smiling and Aeriousness.
8) No Guilt.
9) Find anyone who you think possibly could be a better artist or as good talk to them for a long time & then decide wether to kill them or not. – Take some time though because more likely than not they are just another bad artist – with some great attributes.
10) Learn to control every aspect of your body randomly.
11) Do Not be Afraid of anything
12) Expect Everything
13) Say very little.
14) Do what you love.
Scott Reeder gave D.B Oath of Silence
“Donald Baechler’s Tips for Success”
-as told to me by Scott Reeder
9.10
1.) Varnish. (Last Coat)
2) Size is important. (Big)
3.) Small -(around Chistmas time-) for about 10 thou each
4) Surface -(Even if there is no point you want to build up the surface so it looks like you did more work.)
5) Details are important (Different size brushes Different size marks → Will jack up price – Complexity)
6) Question posed to Donald Abstract vs Realism?
“He had no answer”– But Scott says in a bad economy- Realism wins.
7.) High Fiber Diet & Red Wine.
8.) Cigars are in. Cigerettes are out.
9.) Plastic Surgery
10.) In New York Jasper Johns is the man to talk to. (They call him the $15 million dollar artist - + he’s a good cook)
11.) Science, Philosophy Archeology (in the 70’s) Religon & Arthistory are better than Arthistory references–The more the better– Anything you can layer on for the critics to decode [He noted to Scott that perhaps a new generation of critics – maybe influenced more by media (video games etc.) – has arrived He wasn’t sure at all]
————— the next day
(1)12.) Don’t shave
(2)13.) Make it clear wether Its a business or a religion.
(3)13.) Varnish (Stated again)
(4)15) Stripes —
direct Quote —
“Stripes are a proven money maker”
What about dots - Scott asked-
He DB said - “Not as good.”
Scott asked again
“What about dots – could I maybe do the dot thing” & He said “Again, Stripes are a proven moneymaker”
(5)16) Lead - Paint or Lead do something with lead
(He mentioned Anselm Kiefer & a $500,000 average per painting)
(6)17) Tracing & Erasing – are both good
